Faculty NewsMeier Steps Down as Biostatistics Head
In recognizing Meiers success in increasing the strength and scholarly creativity of the Divisions academic, research and service programs, CSPH Dean Allan Rosenfield, M.D., cited Meiers leadership in building the clinical trials activities of the Division, and his excellent recruitment of new faculty and unwavering support of the interests of the faculty. He has maintained very high levels of student quality and morale, which have been of great importance to the School and the clinical department in Health Sciences, Rosenfield said. In other Biostatistics news, Daniel Heitjan, Ph.D., and Shaw-Hwa Lo, Ph.D., were elected fellows of the American Statistical association. Heitjan also delivered an invited lecture at the Conference on Burning Issues in Medical Statistics, at De Montfort University, Leicester, England. Acting Division Head Bruce Levin, Ph.D., spoke at the Center for AIDS Prevention Studies, in San Francisco, on the topic of Randomized Designs and Alternatives. He also recently presented Clinical Trials with assured New Treatment for Those at Greater Risk, at Harvard University. Wei-Yann Tsai, Ph.D., organized an invited section on biostatistics at a meeting of the international Chinese Statistical association, held in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Christine Waternaux, Ph.D., participated in a Consensus Development Conference on Acupuncture, sponsored by the National institutes of Healths office of Alternative Medicine and office of Medical Research Application. in addition, she joined a National institutes of Mental Health initial review group for Mental Health Clinical Research Centers, as well as a NIMH-wide Data and Safety Monitoring Board.
