Congresswoman Maloney Visits P&S to Discuss Parkinson's

ew York Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney visited Columbia Health Sciences last month to discuss developments in the effort to find a cure for Parkinson's disease.

Congresswoman Maloney met with several scientists, toured research laboratories, and met with Dr. Stanley Fahn, a Parkinson's disease expert who heads the Depart-ment of Neurology's Division of Parkinson's Disease and Other Movement Disorders, to discuss the latest research.

After the facilities tour on Dec. 11, the congresswoman, who is co-chair of the Congressional Working Group on Parkinson's Disease, held a press conference to discuss what she had seen. She announced her plans to introduce, with several of her colleagues, legislation to reauthorize the Morris K. Udall Parkinson's Research Act. Named for the former congressman who suffered from Parkinson's disease, the Udall Centers Act provides for the establishment of a Parkinson's research and training program. Columbia is a Udall Center grant recipient.
