Irving Scholar Program Supports Young Scientists
The Irving Scholar program was initiated in 1987 by Herbert and Florence Irving, longtime supporters of Columbia University Medical Center. Recognizing the importance of training young clinical investigators, Mr. and Mrs. Irving earmarked a major portion of their endowment to the Irving Center for Clinical Research (now the Irving Institute for Clinical and Translational Research) to support the Florence and Herbert Irving Clinical Research Career Awards, commonly referred to as the “Irving Scholars.”
The program is open to assistant professors from all clinical departments at CUMC. Scholars are selected on the basis of research proposals that reflect independent, well-designed and well-developed scientific initiatives in clinical investigation. Investigators are expected to make significant use of the resources of the Irving Institute. Since the program's inception, 79 scholars have been chosen, including physicians who have since become internationally recognized for their work. Some Irving Scholars now holding prominent positions at CUMC are Steve Shea, M.D., Hamilton Southworth Professor of Medicine, professor of epidemiology (in biomedical informatics), and vice dean and senior associate dean for clinical affairs; Mitchell Benson, M.D., George F. Cahill Professor and Chairman of Urology; Mehmet Oz, M.D., professor of surgery; Jonathan Aviv, M.D., professor of otolaryngology/head and neck surgery and director of the Voice and Swallowing Center in the Department of Otolaryngology; and Robin Goland, M.D., associate professor of medicine and co-director of the Naomi Berrie Diabetes Center.
