Latino Social Service building To rise near cumc campus Alianza Dominicana broke ground Feb. 8 for the headquarters of its organization, the largest Latino social service provider in northern Manhattan. The Triangle Building, as it is known, will be constructed at the intersection of Audubon and St. Nicholas Avenues and 166th Street. The 48,000- square-foot, six-story building will house the first Dominican/Latino cultural center in the United States, the Casa Afro-Quisqueya Cultural Center, as well as other for-profit businesses and non-profit community services. With 15 different sites in northern Manhattan and the West Bronx and a budget of more than $12 million, Alianza annually serves more than 20,000 individuals citywide.
The Triangle Building is backed by a public/private partnership that includes CUMC, the Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone, and the Local Initiatives Support Corporation. CUMC has collaborated with Alianza on community health care initiatives to improve the health and quality of life of residents in northern Manhattan. The project was supported by various elected officials, including Congressman Charles Rangel, State Sen. Eric T. Schneiderman and New York City Councilman Miguel Martinez.
