Mailman School Honors First Lady of the United Republic of Tanzania The Mailman School of Public Health and the International Center for AIDS Care and Treatment Programs (ICAP) held a panel discussion in September for the First Lady of the United Republic of Tanzania, Her Excellency Mama Salma Kikwete. The program, “Responding to the Health Needs of Women and Children in Resource-Limited Settings,” provided perspectives on health initiatives under way in Tanzania and other countries and the successes and challenges in supporting services and health systems in resource-limited settings. ICAP works with the Tanzania Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to build national expertise in HIV/AIDS service delivery as set forth in the National HIV/AIDS Care and Treatment Plan of Tanzania. Mrs. Kikwete, a science and mathematics teacher, is a leader in her country’s efforts to combat HIV/AIDS. She launched a national campaign known as ”Mtoto wa Mwenzio ni Mwanao (Treat Every Child as Your Own),” which focuses on taking to task adults who engage in sexual relationships with minors. Her husband, Jakaya Kikwete, was elected president of Tanzania in 2005.
