Dear Colleagues & Students,
|
When we speak of patient care, we typically focus on the skill of individual physicians, dentists and nurses. However, from the patient’s perspective, the interface with our staff and our systems is oftentimes as, or more, important. This fall our P&S Faculty Practice Organization (FPO) took a major step toward enhancing the total patient experience by committing to a computerized health records system to be used by all practicing physicians and residents associated with CUMC and NYPH/Columbia.
With the new system, patients will no longer have to fill out duplicate forms. Physicians will have instant access to all patient records at the point of care. This timely sharing of information will raise our already high level of medical safety and better leverage the expertise of our outstanding physicians. The system will not only support everyday clinical tasks, but also will help streamline compliance with insurance companies and regulatory agencies and facilitate clinical research. From the patient’s perspective, communication will be dramatically improved. The Web-based system will strengthen our partnerships with patients, allowing them to make appointments and view lab results and other medical records online, as well as to communicate directly with doctors and practice staff. The patient experience will be vastly enhanced.
This is a major commitment on the part of our FPO and our physicians to change “business as usual” for our patients’ ultimate benefit. By automating and connecting patients’ records, we will improve the continuity of care and enhance our ability to deliver research advances to the clinical setting. I would like to extend my personal appreciation to the FPO leadership and the many faculty who participated in the evaluation and selection of the new system and to the physicians who will pioneer the use of the new electronic health record.
We still have plenty of work ahead of us as we strive to ensure a smooth introduction and implementation of this new system. But we should be proud that we are ready, willing, and able to do our collective best to deliver the highest quality of advanced, yet personal, patient-friendly and family-friendly care.
