Students Learn Symbolism of the White Coat

Approximately 150 new first-year P&S students were challenged by Dr. Arnold P. Gold, P&S professor of clinical neurology and clinical pediatrics, to "be the kind of doctor you would want to take care of you if you became ill," at a formal ceremony Aug. 22. The annual event is sponsored by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation, which advocates humanism in medicine and encourages medical students from the outset to consider the need for compassion in medicine. "Caring plays an important part of curing," says Dr. Gold.
