The Reporter: February 1997, Vol.8, No.1
Institute of Medicine: Part II
Last fall, seven Columbia faculty were elected to the Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the National Academy of Science. The December 1996 issue of the Reporter profiled the seven and listed other current Columbia members of IOM. However, the list did not include a few Columbians who are identified by IOM as members through other affiliations.
Dr. Michael Katz--who is the Carpentier Professor Emeritus of Pediatrics, professor emeritus of public health, and special lecturer in pediatrics--is an IOM member. The IOM membership roster identifies him through his March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation affiliation. Similarly, Dr. Lawrence A. Shepp, adjunct professor of statistics at Columbia and previously a faculty member in radiology at P&S, is listed as an IOM representative from AT&T Laboratories.
Dr. Margaret Hamburg, assistant professor of clinical public health, received her IOM appointment through the City of New York; Dr. Harold S. Ginsberg, Higgins Professor Emeritus of Microbiology, professor emeritus of medicine, and special lecturer in medicine and microbiology, represents the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases; Dr. Howard Bailit, adjunct professor in the School of Public Health, was elected from the University of Connecticut; and Dr. Robert Levy, adjunct professor of medicine and former vice president of the Health Sciences, represents Wyeth-Ayerst Research.
