P&S Medical Review: Information for Authors

The P&S Medical Review welcomes articles on clinical and scientific subjects from students and faculty of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University. Articles published become property of the trustees of Columbia University. Statements contained therein are the responsibility of the author(s). Material published in the P&S Medical Review may not be reproduced in any form without the written permission of the editor-in-chief.

Manuscripts

A cover letter with the corresponding author's name, address, and telephone number should be submitted with one original and three copies of each manuscript to The P&S Medical Review, P&S Box CC, College of Physicians and Surgeons, 630 West 168 Street, New York, NY 10032. One original 5" x 7" photograph and three photocopies of each figure should be included. In addition, all text should be submitted on one 3.5" hi-density computer disk, formatted for Macintosh or DOS. Receipt of the manuscript will be acknowledged in writing by the editors. Manuscripts will be reviewed by at least three members of the board of editors and then submitted to two members of the faculty of the College of Physicians and Surgeons for anonymous review. Authors will be notified of acceptance within six weeks from the date of receipt by the editors. All authors of manuscripts accepted for publication will be required to sign a "Notice of Copyright Transfer." Research or project support should be listed in an acknowledgment.

Text, references, legends, and tables should be printed on standard 8.5" x 11" paper, double-spaced. Pagination should begin with the title page and include, in the following order: title page, abstract, text, references, acknowledgment of support, tables and figures, legends.

Title page

Should include title, authors' names with highest academic degrees earned, date submitted, and the address and telephone number of the corresponding author. A running title of three to six words should also be included.

Abstract

Should be limited to 250 words and should briefly outline the scope and focus of the manuscript as well as its conclusions

Text

Should include subheadings in bold face when appropriate. Measurements should be reported in metric units. Every reference, figure, and table should be cited in numerical order. Tables and figures and their legends should be cited by Arabic numerals and appended following the manuscript pages. No abbreviations are accepted, unless first defined within the text.

References

Should be numbered in order of mention and cited by superscript numerals in the text. Provide concluding page numbers for all journal references and specific page numbers for all book references. Indicate all abstracts and letters. Reference format should follow the general arrangement, abbreviations, and punctuation given in The National Library of Medicine Recommended Formats for Bibliographic Citation. For periodicals, follow INDEX MEDICUS and list all authors. When authors number six or more, list only the first three and add et al.

Tables

Each individual table should begin at the top of a new page. In addition, they should be given Arabic numerals corresponding to the order in which they are mentioned in the text.

Legends

Each individual legend should begin at the top of a new page. At the end of each legend all abbreviations used in the figure should be identified.

Figures

Illustrations should be submitted in 5" x 7" black-and-white glossy format. The author's name and figure number should be printed in pencil on the back of each photo along with indication of the orientation. Photographs of published articles can not be returned. Number figures in the order in which they are mentioned in the text. Submit written permission from the publisher and author to reproduce any previously published figures.
